The only two people in my family who completely understand me are about to move 2,500 miles west. Dad and Jason, I love you both so much and I miss you already.

For over nineteen years, I’ve been told to believe something that was supposedly written thousands of years ago by an invisible man in the sky. Today, it’s become crystal clear to me that this is, purely and simply, a lie. I just find it extremely difficult to believe that there’s this “higher power” that created everything that exists, and who controls all the goings-on of the universe.

Look, if you believe in any sort of god, fine. So be it. I’m in no position to tell you what to believe, because my entire life, I’ve been in a position where I was told to believe in one thing and one thing only. Recently, I’ve started to think a little more freely, and I’ve thought about religion and faith. It’s my belief that organized religion is the worst thing that’s ever happened to mankind. Beliefs that were meant to keep people peaceful have been used to justify countless atrocities throughout time.

Where’s the fairness in any of this? Teachings that I feel are supposed to be open for interpretation have been skewed into being the only correct answer for some people. Why is it that religion is taught more in schools than free thought? Maybe someone should open a school of free thought as opposed to a religious institution.

I feel that people have turned to religion throughout human history as the result of a fear of the unknown. Ironically enough, they place their faith into what I feel is the biggest unknown of all - the existence of god. If you can tell me with all certainty that a god of some kind exists in any way, shape or form, good for you. Who am I to try to convince you otherwise?

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that regardless of what you believe in, it’s important to respect the beliefs of others, no matter how much you may disagree. I just hope that if anybody who comes across this disagrees with me, they can at least hear me out and understand where I’m coming from.

Believe what you want to believe, because at the end of the day, no one knows with complete certainty whether or not god exists. Just remember that life is entirely too short to go around hating people. Be the best person you can be, and you’ll be rewarded in one way or another.

I feel like I saw a train coming from a mile away and I let it hit me anyway.

I can’t be the only one that noticed this, right?
